We can all agree that AI tools generate copy quickly. What content editors need, however, isn’t more text for the sake of text. They need output with a clear point, a defined audience, and enough substance to build on.
That’s where prompt engineering becomes a useful skill. Done well, it helps teams turn generative AI (GenAI) into a practical editorial tool rather than a source of generic slop.
In this post, we look at six ways to get better results by improving inputs, clarifying tasks, shaping structure earlier, and keeping editorial judgment where it belongs: with the team.
A good prompt needs something concrete to build on. That might be a brief, a transcript, or approved messaging. When AI has solid material to work from, the draft usually comes back sharper and more relevant. Low-calorie inputs, meanwhile, produce copy that’s deeply unsatisfying to edit or read.

And in any case, most of our work as editors happens in smaller increments. Editors sharpen openings, refine subheads, and reshape sections for different readers. Prompt engineering becomes much more valuable if it can operate at that level of granularity.
Give your AI assistant one task at a time, in an orderly sequence. State the audience, the goal, and the format you want back. For example: “Rewrite this intro for a technical audience. Keep the core message, remove vague phrasing, avoid filler, and stay under 120 words.”
Structure gives us something solid to react to. An outline, a set of subheads, or a message summary makes the big decisions visible early. We can see what the piece is trying to say, where it’s headed, and whether the argument has enough structure to support a full draft.
That matters in content marketing, where one piece often has to do several jobs at once. It may need to support a campaign, speak to a specific audience, and carry a clear brand message. Structure helps us line those things up before we get lost in the word count.
Often, the best AI output comes from approaching a project in phases rather than asking it to do everything at once. Outline first, then build section by section. Refine each section before moving on.

Ask for an outline, subheads, or a message summary before you ask for full sections. For example: “Using the transcript below, build a blog outline for marketing leaders. Focus on three core takeaways, flag any missing support, and suggest a structure for a 1,200-word post.”
AI tools can be super useful in review and feedback loops, too. Ask the right question, and it can spot vague claims, catch repetition, and show where the draft starts wandering off-message.
That kind of support goes a long way. Weak content often hides in familiar places: a soft opening, a bloated middle, or a section that says the expected thing without saying much at all. AI can help surface those problems faster, especially when you ask it to review against the brief.
For content marketing managers, this is often where the real value shows up. We usually don’t need more words. We need sharper ones.
Ask your AI assistant to flag vague phrasing, buried messaging, and places where the draft drifts from the brief. Ask it to point out weak arguments, missing information, and objections the draft fails to address. For example: “Review the draft below against this brief. This fits the way content teams actually work. We’re rarely starting from zero. More often, we’re reworking, reshaping, and extending material that already exists. Prompt engineering helps teams do that more efficiently.
This is also where structure pays off. Reusable source material makes prompting easier, and clear messaging keeps the work consistent across channels.
Ask your AI assistant to adapt a sample of approved content into new formats. Start with material that already has a clear message and audience.
Prompt engineering can improve the draft, but the final call is ours. Editors and marketers know the brief, the audience, and the brand voice. We know when a section feels flat, when a message has lost its edge, and when a piece still needs work. That judgment shapes the final quality of the content.
AI fits well inside that process. It helps us move faster and handle more of the heavy lifting around drafting, reviewing, and reshaping, but the final decisions still belong to the people who understand the context.
Treat AI output as working copy. Review it against the brief, the audience, and the channel before it moves forward. Be on the lookout for stale copy, rehashed “AI-tell” language, and places where a human quote or anecdote might breathe new life into a draft.

That’s the real job of prompt engineering. We’re taking an assignment that's vivid in our minds and making it explicit enough for the AI model to do useful work with it.
