Upcoming Limit for Expanded GraphQL Fragment Spreads

Effective date: October 9th, 2026

To improve GraphQL API reliability, Contentful will introduce a limit of 40,000 expanded fragment spreads per request.

Expanded fragment spreads count fragment usages after resolving nested fragment references. Queries at or below the limit are unaffected.

Starting on the effective date, queries exceeding 40,000 expanded fragment spreads will return HTTP 400 with the following error code and message:

Who is affected? This change affects applications that generate GraphQL queries containing extensive repetition across nested fragments. Most applications will not require changes.

The fragment spread expansion limit is independent of your space’s query-complexity allowance.
