Developers, designers, and copywriters alike met in our FooBar to deepen their knowledge of web accessibility and spark discussions around assistive technology. The event was organized by Joschi Kuphal, an interior designer and programmer who also runs IndieWebCamps, as well as our own developer evangelist Stefan Judis. We were lucky enough to host some of the biggest names in the industry today: Heydon Pickering, Laura Kalbag, and Detlev Fischer.
Kicking off the event was Heydon Pickering, a freelance web accessibility consultant, interface designer, and writer. In his talk, Heydon spoke about the differences between accessibility and inclusive design. He also touched on some of his recent projects, including his blog Inclusive Components, ForceFeed.js and the Cupper Documentation Builder.
Laura Kalbag took the stage next. She’s a designer, writer, and one half of Ind.ie. Her talk focused on integrating accessibility and inclusivity into all aspects of your product—from business model and design process, all the way to the content you create. She also brought along copies of her new book, Accessibility for Everyone.
Following a delicious lunch of Syrian treats, Detlev Fischer was up. Detlev is a web and mobile accessibility tester and an invited expert of W3C’s Accessibility Guidelines Working Group. His talk introduced us to the COMPARE project, a common wiki-based repository of real web content cases where accessibility testers can compare their ratings.
The day closed with a series of discussion groups, covering the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1, how to evangelize a11y within your company, and more. While we were sad to say goodbye, we have some good news! The next a11yclub event was just announced and will take place in Munich on Jan. 15, 2018. You can check out the a11yclub website for the full details.
a11y Meetups are coming to Berlin
If you’re in Berlin and interested in continuing the conversation around an inclusive and accessible web, join the new a11y Meetup. Formed from a discussion at a11yclub, this new Meetup will launch on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Project A Ventures.
