Your business is growing. You're publishing content in more markets, to more audiences, and developing new assets to get that job done.

But that growth puts pressure on your content management system (CMS). You need a platform that delivers flexibility and speed, and that doesn't lock you into the vendor-authorized capabilities the system shipped with. In other words, you need a headless CMS.

The good news is there's a headless CMS market full of options to meet your needs. The bad news? On paper, many of these content management systems look remarkably similar, which makes the jump from a legacy content platform daunting if you don’t have the lay of the land.

Contentful from Salesforce can help. We’ve put together a shortlist of the top headless CMS platforms — and we’re going to take you through them.

Why go headless?

If marketing teams can’t rely on the CMS to power their workflows as they scale, delays and bottlenecks start to emerge, inaccuracies creep into content, experiences fragment — and customers notice.

And scaling doesn’t just mean creating more content. To ensure they’re getting as much value as possible from their content, marketers need to be able to publish, review and adjust experiences constantly without relying on developers.

That's difficult if you’re working with an inflexible legacy CMS. In that environment, marketers often can’t manage content without looping in technical teams, or work at the speed they need to keep pace with markets and audiences.

Headless CMSes remove the limitations of the traditional CMS. Separating content from code, they offer access for non-technical users and give marketers freedom to manage content autonomously, while allowing developers to build a flexible content modeling system and evolve the technology behind it.

We’ve talked about the advantages of headless CMSes over their monolithic counterparts before so we won’t go too deep here. If you want to know more, take a closer look at the architecture, or browse our headless CMS checklist.

Which headless CMS is right for my business?

Contentful pioneered the headless content movement, but multiple platforms now also occupy that space — which can make your digital transformation decision process trickier.

To help you clear the path, we’re examining Contentful and four other key headless CMSes — Sanity, Storyblok, Contentstack, and Strapi — across the criteria that matter most when making a purchase decision:

  • Developer experience: Can developers work autonomously without disrupting live service?

  • Editorial autonomy: Can marketers work in the CMS without developer support?

  • Delivery and infrastructure: How fast and reliable is content delivery?

  • Localization and translation: How well does the CMS support multi-region publishing?

  • Governance and security: What compliance, access control, and audit capabilities are on offer?

  • Operational costs: What does it cost to run, and what's the long-term value?

  • Extensibility: How well does it integrate with the rest of your stack?

The CMSes

Contentful

Developer experience

Designed for autonomous development and deployment. Sandbox environments, environment aliases for safer releases, and access via APIs, SDKs, and GraphQL. CLI and migration tooling support a "content as code" workflow. Offers a bring-your-own-model (BYOM) to connect existing licenses for AI providers. MCP server available.

Editorial autonomy

Freedom for marketers. Live preview, scheduled publishing, bulk editing, and workflows. Contentful’s Visual Modeler gives marketers and architects a shared canvas for mapping content relationships without needing a developer for every change or update.

Delivery & infrastructure

Industry-leading reliability. Content Delivery API runs over a globally distributed CDN. Enterprise customers get multi-region delivery with automatic regional failover. Up to 99.99% uptime SLA.

Localization & translation

AI-assisted localization. Localized workflows let translation and review be managed by language within the same space.

Governance & security

Roles/permissions, SSO, teams, environment governance, SCIM provisioning; SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified, with regional data residency options on Enterprise. GDPR compliant.

Operational costs

Free tier. Lite tier from $300 per month. Premium (Enterprise) custom-quoted.

Extensibility

Highly extensible. App Framework, Marketplace, webhooks, App Events, and Functions for custom apps, editorial experiences, and automated workflows.

Contentful works best in growing organizations that need to scale or in enterprise teams that need to manage multi-channel content ecosystems without sacrificing platform capabilities. The headless CMS offers a balance between editorial autonomy for multiple users, developer-friendly power, mature governance, and extensibility.

Get Contentful if you need a scalable, flexible content platform that can support more complex content models, structured content, and operations across multiple teams, markets, and channels.

Sanity

Developer experience

A developer-centric platform. Sanity Studio is an open-source React app, with content models defined in JavaScript/TypeScript and queried via GROQ or GraphQL. MCP server available for AI assistants, and Sanity Context (a separate product) provides a hosted, read-only MCP server.

Editorial autonomy

Supports live preview, visual editing, multi-editor collaboration, comments, and scheduled drafts. Non-technical teams may have to rely on engineering to set up and maintain editorial workflow, deeper customizations, and governance layers.

Delivery & infrastructure

Sanity’s content delivery runs over a global CDN. Enterprise plan offers 99.9% uptime SLA. Sanity’s Content Lake database is hosted in a single data center in Belgium. No native support for multi-region database deployments.

Localization & translation

Flexible field or document-level translation. Offers an AI-driven translation feature.

Governance & security

SOC 2, GDPR, and CCPA compliant. SAML SSO, custom roles, and custom audit logs are available on Enterprise plans.

Operational costs

Offers a Free tier. Growth plan from $15 per seat per month. Enterprise plan is custom. API requests, AI usage, and other services are metered, so costs can become less predictable with scale.

Extensibility

Sanity Studio is open source and ships with serverless Functions, event-driven triggers, and agentic AI for custom automation. Sanity’s plugin ecosystem is useful for developer-led teams willing to build.

Sanity works best when developer-led teams need control over how content is structured, managed, and delivered, in exchange for building most editorial and governance tooling themselves.Single-region hosting might be an issue for organizations with specific region-based compliance requirements.

Get Sanity if you have a strong development team that wants maximum flexibility to customize your content model, editorial workflows, and technical specs.

Storyblok

Developer experience

API-first, built around a reusable, structured content model: "Blocks". REST/GraphQL, CLI, and test environments (on specific plans) are  supported. MCP server available with BYOM support.

Editorial autonomy

Storyblok’s Visual Editor is well-suited to non-technical editors. New components and deeper structural changes still need engineering input.

Delivery & infrastructure

Uptime SLA varies by plan. No SLA for Starter tier. 97% uptime on Growth and Growth Plus. 99.9% on Premium and Elite plans. Multi-Space Content Distribution syncs brands and markets for enterprise-level customers.

Localization & translation

Field, folder, folder-level and space-level translation, and third-party integrations. AI translation available.

Governance & security

ISO 27001 certified and GDPR compliant. While Storyblok does not hold SOC 2 certification, its data host, Amazon AWS, does.

Operational costs

Free Starter tier. Entry-level Growth tier from €99 per month. Growth Plus from €349 per month. Premium & Elite enterprise plans are custom. Add-ons, including AI usage credits, are available and make scaling price harder to predict.

Extensibility

An ecosystem of partners and integrations. The FlowMotion automation layer enhances agentic automation of workflows, and the Strata vector database layer powers better search and content recommendations.

Storyblok works best when marketer-led teams want to build and edit pages visually with minimal developer involvement.

Get Storyblok if you want marketers to build and manage web experiences themselves, with strong visual page building potential and minimal developer involvement.

Contentstack

Developer experience

REST/GraphQL APIs, SDKs, branches for isolated development, and an MCP server with OAuth authentication.

Editorial autonomy

Built around a structured content model. Ships with no-code Visual Editor, workflows, and in-context publishing.

Delivery & infrastructure

Global CDN, regional data centers, and dedicated infrastructure for data sovereignty needs. Enterprise tier offers 99.5% uptime SLA.

Localization & translation

Supports over 200 languages with master and fallback languages for managing localized content. Localized assets managed via the Assets API, and third-party integrations to expand capabilites.

Governance & security

SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified. Provides a Security Dashboard and Log Targets feature.

Operational costs

Free plan available, Build plan at £29, Growth plan at $299, Enterprise tier is custom. AI credits, extra usage, and add-ons are charged separately, which makes total cost harder to model upfront.

Extensibility

Contentstack launched its Marketplace in 2022 and is expanding its partner ecosystem.

Contentstack works best for enterprise teams that need strong governance, localization, and editorial tooling alongside flexible content management. Contentstack is also well suited to organizations with fully custom, sales-led pricing rather than published rates.

Get Contentstack if you're an enterprise organization that wants structured content and robust governance and localization capabilities, and you're confident you’ll get value from the quote-based pricing approach.

Strapi

Developer experience

Open-source and self-hostable with Node.js, Strapi’s Server API supports plugins, and the platform ships with an MCP server that offers token-based access to content. BYOM support is possible but depends on developer-built integration rather than a shipped capability.

Editorial autonomy

The Content-type Builder enables no-code editing once content types exist, but schema changes may need developer attention. Paid plans add enhanced Live Preview features.

Delivery & infrastructure

Option to self-host with full responsibility for scaling and region choice, or use Strapi Cloud, which adds a global CDN, custom domains, an observability dashboard, and backups.

Localization & translation

An internationalization plugin with customizable locales and locale-specific permissions.

Governance & security

Role-based access control available from free tier, along with GDPR and SOC 2 compliance. Enterprise tier offers SSO, audit logs, and SOC 2 reporting. Since Strapi is often self-hosted, security specifics may depend on how it's deployed.

Operational costs

The Community plan is free. Growth plan costs $45 per month and Enterprise plan is custom. Self-hosting option shifts cost to infrastructure and engineering time.

Extensibility

Plugin architecture and community marketplace for APIs and components. The MCP server extends this into agentic AI-driven workflows.

Strapi works best for developer-led organizations that want full ownership of their content infrastructure — in exchange for taking on more of the operational and security responsibility themselves.

Get Strapi if you want an open-source CMS with maximum control over your code and tech stack, and have the engineering resources to manage it.

So, which headless CMS is the one for you?

The right answer to that question will be determined by what you need right now and how your needs will evolve in the future. The point of headless CMS infrastructure is to free your organization from vendor-locked limitations on content at both a technical and creative level.

For perspective, let’s round up the platforms we reviewed.

Contentful

Sanity

Storyblok

Contentstack

• Built for scaling and growth.

• Excellent accessibility for nontechnical teams.

• Vast partner ecosystem.

• Open-source flexibility for developers.

• Highly customizable.

• Single-region hosting.

• Strong visual editing tools.

• Marketer independence.

• Multiple paid tier options.

• Developer-led control.

• Open source, full platform ownership.

• Good localization options.

Wrapping up

When it comes to headless CMS options, everyone is looking for some degree of flexibility.

In developer-led organizations, where product innovation and ongoing evolution are determined by a narrow business agenda, an open-source or highly specialized content platform may be what’s needed. If you have the technical expertise to build, customize, and maintain your own content infrastructure, the additional control can be well worth it.

But for organizations that are growing, seeking new audiences, and developing new experiences, structured content, future-proofing, scalability, and governance are only going to become more important.

And as every vendor in this space converges on similar table-stakes capabilities — including reusable content components and AI-agent access via MCP — the differentiators rest on how well governed, reliable, and transparently priced a platform is, not just its headline feature list.

That's why it's worth knowing more than just the contents of a platform’s marketing page. Finding the SLAs, certifications, pricing structures, and other details behind the headline features can help you make a more informed assessment of its capabilities — and feed into your decision-making at every stage of procurement, from the demo through to evaluation.

The Contentful advantage

Contentful’s depth and composable potential make a difference here.

Rather than making content teams stitch together a collection of separate capabilities, Contentful integrates headless content management with the tools you need to turn digital assets into engaging experiences, including localization, personalization, experimentation, analytics, and AI integrations.

In Contentful, those content components are part of a thriving ecosystem, which includes the App Framework and the Contentful Marketplace. Every tool your teams need is seamlessly connected to the stack by a network of APIs, which ensures everyone — content creators, marketers, and developers — always have what they need to work autonomously.

The result is a platform that can support any type of business or content strategy — from startups taking their first steps in the market to global enterprises launching campaigns across the globe.
