AI localization: How Contentful changes global content workflows

Business growth is good news. Mostly good news.

A bigger reach means you’ll need to connect with customers in new markets, and the content experiences you’ve created to sell your product at home won’t automatically deliver the same results on the other side of the world.

In short, you’ll need to adapt your content for those customers into content they understand, that reflects their culture, and that meets local search engine optimization (SEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) requirements.

That’s why content localization is a marketing priority and why the content platform you choose to power that localization is critical to the success of your growth strategy.

In this post, we’ll explore how Contentful is empowering brands to localize content experiences with unprecedented speed and consistency and how we do that with built-in generative AI (GenAI)-powered capabilities.

What is localization?

Localization isn’t just about converting words into different languages. In other words, it’s not simply translation (in fact, translation is only one part of localization).

Localization means adapting the experience itself. You’re changing images, currencies, units of measurement, place names, social and cultural references, and even seasonal framing to align with the expectations of regional audiences.

That task becomes increasingly complex when you need to maintain a consistent brand identity across vast libraries of digital content in multiple global markets. Beyond the initial localization process, teams will also need to coordinate ongoing updates, reviews, and approvals across regions to ensure every market stays aligned as content evolves.

It's especially challenging in systems dominated by manual tasks and disconnected workflows. In these environments, administrative burdens increase, mistakes and inconsistencies creep in, and experiences become fragmented and fail to resonate with local audiences.

The result is slower growth, higher operational costs, and content that struggles to perform.

Fortunately, we're no longer limited by those manual processes because AI, and, more specifically, AI embedded into localization workflows, is changing what's possible.

What is AI localization?

AI localization makes it easier to scale localization across a global content ecosystem. It adds speed and consistency to the process of creating, adapting, and publishing localized content.

Rather than simply translating text into multiple languages, AI-powered localization can leverage GenAI to support content creation, review, optimization, and governance while also reducing repetitive manual work throughout the localization workflow.

This is why your content platform matters. When GenAI-powered tools are embedded effectively into your content operations, localization becomes faster, more scalable, and significantly easier to manage.

Contentful AI Actions for localization

Fully integrated into the Contentful platform and available at the click of a button, AI Actions is Contentful’s AI-powered content transformation capability. It’s designed to help teams create, translate, rewrite, and update content directly within their existing content workflows, including their localization workflow.

Instead of copying content into third-party translation tools, relying on disconnected workflows, or waiting for developers to support the workflow, content teams can use AI Actions to perform localization directly inside Contentful.

What does that look like? You can explore the full range of AI Actions here — but to save you some time, here are five of the most impactful ways Actions can improve your localization process.

Translate content where it lives

Many legacy platforms require content teams to copy and paste content into third-party translation tools before manually transferring it back into their platform’s content management system (CMS) for review and publication. Every extra step introduces delays and increases the likelihood of errors.

AI Actions removes that friction by allowing marketers to translate content directly inside Contentful, where the content already lives. Editors simply choose a target language and select the “Translate” Action.

Because Contentful uses structured content, translations can be applied at the field level — headlines, body copy, summaries, descriptions — or across entire entries: pages, campaigns, and so on.

There's no copying and pasting, no disconnected workflows, and no unnecessary context switching. Editors can immediately review translations, make refinements where required, and publish with confidence. In Contentful, translation is a seamless part of the content workflow, not a separate process.

Translate content at scale

Translating a single entry is one thing. Translating an entire website, an entire campaign, or thousands of product pages is another.

AI Actions’ Bulk translation allows teams to translate multiple entries in a single go, including linked entries that form part of larger content structures. That means entire campaigns, product catalogues, or websites can be localized in one workflow, and content teams aren’t stuck at the keyboard repeating the same task hundreds of times.

Working at this scale also makes it easier to maintain consistency. Teams can review translations for terminology, tone, and brand alignment before publishing, helping keep localization consistent across large volumes of content.

For organizations expanding into new markets, that means localization can become a reliable part of the growth strategy rather than a one-off departmental effort or inevitable bottleneck.

Customize translations to your brand

Translation is never one-size-fits-all.

Cultural nuance, brand voice, market expectations, and even local trends all influence how content should be adapted. Context matters, which means brands need more than generic machine translation.

You can customize templated AI Actions to reflect those requirements. Teams can upload brand guidelines and supporting documentation, define approved terminology, configure instructions, and add variables that provide additional context for the AI Action, further tailoring outputs to specific markets or use cases.

In other words, you can teach AI Actions how your organization communicates. Rather than acting like a generic translation engine, the AI generates localized content that reflects (and doesn’t dilute) your brand voice while connecting more effectively with regional audiences.

Apply localization governance

Localization isn't just about generating regional content variants; you’ll also have to manage the workflows behind that content, including the review, approval, publication, and maintenance processes.

As your digital ecosystem grows into new markets, you’ll need variants to suit an increasing number of regional audiences — and maintaining effective governance of that library will become increasingly difficult.

AI Actions and Bulk AI Actions are designed to support your existing governance processes rather than replace them. Teams can not only generate translations but also review them for fluency, tone, terminology, and brand consistency before publication. In support of those processes, AI Suggestions help identify potential issues, while Workflows and role-based permissions ensure the right people review and approve content where required.

That advanced level of governance flexibility allows organizations to apply different levels of oversight depending on the content requirements.

For example, Automations can define workflows where AI Actions automatically translate content and then route it through human-in-the-loop review steps, approvals, and other tasks before publication.

Long story short, AI Actions is a way to accelerate localization without compromising quality or governance.

Transform the localization workflow

Producing and publishing region-specific content experiences is only part of the localization challenge. That content also needs to perform in local markets, which means it needs to be visible.

That means optimizing for both search engines and AI-powered answer engines. Your localized content will need localized metadata, LLM-friendly FAQs, image alt text, and so on. You’ll have to ensure that every market receives content that's discoverable as well as culturally relevant.

AI Actions can help you automate these tasks too. After translating content, for example, you can use AI Actions to generate market-specific metadata, optimize localized keywords, create accessible content, and even suggest additional improvements that strengthen performance in regional markets.

When combined with Contentful Automations, these capabilities allow organizations to build end-to-end localization workflows that set your content up for success no matter where you need to publish.

Easier localization, stronger engagement

Localization has traditionally been viewed as a time- and resource-intensive process involving multiple tools, disconnected workflows, and significant manual effort. AI changes that, but only when it's available and accessible to content teams.

Contentful combines AI Actions, AI Suggestions, Workflows and Automations to help teams translate content faster, review before publishing, coordinate approvals, and scale localization without increasing operational complexity. It provides a simple, convenient way for teams to translate faster, and scale more efficiently — all while maintaining brand consistency and reducing workflow friction across global content operations.

We support our AI capabilities with a suite of powerful content management tools built on composable architecture. For example, with Contentful Locales, organizations can maintain regional copies of the same assets. Teams only have to create core content once and then can localize individual entries for specific regions within the same structured content model.

The Contentful advantage goes beyond an AI-powered localization speed-boost for brands with global ambitions; it’s scalability, accessibility, convenience built into workflows, and governance processes designed to power future growth.
